/* this browser can't talk to the card */

The card connects over Web Serial, which only exists in a few browsers.

  • works Chrome, Edge or Opera — on a laptop or desktop
  • no Safari and Firefox, which don't implement Web Serial
  • no any browser on a phone or tablet, including Chrome

If you scanned the QR code with your phone: that was the right instinct, wrong machine. Open wc-souffle.joshchans.com on your computer, in Chrome or Edge, with the card plugged in.

There is a message on that board. It is not on this website — this page is an empty terminal until the card decides otherwise.

Plug the card in over USB-C first, then hit connect and pick it from the list. Leave it plugged in — unplug it and the message goes away.

That's the whole instruction. The board has the rest.

The card is locked. Hold ENTER on it for a moment when you're ready to put the key in — until then the buttons belong to the timer.

what the card does now

It's a timer. The eight flames are the eight eighths of whatever duration you set. No computer needed, ever again.

ENTER is the commit button, in every mode. The eight along the bottom are always the number.

ENTERwake it up — it offers your last duration
the eight buttonsset minutes in binary — 128 64 32 16 8 4 2 1
ENTER againstart it
ENTER, runningpause — flames dim. ENTER again to resume
hold any of the eight, 1.5scancel, or reset a running timer
hold ENTER, 1.5sask for the key again, to re-read this
hold the outer two, 3splay the birthday sequence again

One flame goes out every eighth of the time. The last one pulses when you're nearly out. When it finishes it beeps and flashes, and any button silences it.

Re-reading means solving it again — the card won't hand the message over twice on one unlock.

Everything on this page was cleared the moment the card went away. That is the entire point of it.
